Overview

You need not be a painter, science lover, or poetry enthusiast….on the contrary you can hate science, find poetry boring, or painting to be rocket science 😊 .

Of course, there is no harm if you love science, write poetry or fill your canvas with colors. To be a part of this workshop you can fall into anyone these categories!

We will explore, experience, and express ‘LIGHT’!!

Interdisciplinary programs draw from two or more academic disciplines that work together to create a powerful learning experience and emphasize integrative learning, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving.

How does interdisciplinary learning help the children?

Takeaways from the workshop:

My Experience As A Facilitator

In a cross-curricular workshop, ‘Patterns of waves’, conceived and conducted by WORDPLAY weaved physics, poetry, and painting together.

The children revisited the concept, went deeper into the patterns of photons, and personified them. They painted their perception of the patterns, scripted poems in the form of kennings and free verses. What evolved was beautiful expressions.

Some fused facts, while some held on to the feelings. But they all broke the boundaries and connected, as a facilitator I sat back observing their free-flowing thoughts. My joy was in seeing them making connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries.
True learning is never reflected in grades scored in the exams but it is seen through their ability to think, feel, connect and communicate.

Our planet and society are plagued with existential challenges and concerns. We need innovators, we need creators, we need thinkers, and most importantly courageous implementors. I strongly feel giving young minds a non -judgmental space to experiment and express, preps them to be our future solution providers.

Educators, Neuro Scientists have time and again reiterated the usefulness of interdisciplinary learning in fostering cognitive development among the learners. I could sense that in this short two-day workshop.

Integrating disciplines into the curriculum will not only make them explore, think but will make the learning process more intriguing and fun. Also, a sense of self-efficacy develops among the learners, more such creative exploration of disciplines will help them to identify the kind of learner in them.

At the end of the workshop, I was not only elated to see them think, imagine and express, but I am also supremely proud of my WORDPLAY ites!

Workshop Response

Interdisciplinary is the current buzzword in the pedagogical domain and this workshop by Soumi Dutta gupta , integrating Science & Poetry is a beautiful amalgamation of creative knowledge process. It is a well curated, executed, supported to enable the young minds to voice their thoughts and feelings, enabling sensorial left- right brain integration.
The tips & techniques offered is just the perfect icing on the cake. All in all, this is one recommended workshop for the holistic approach towards core/ traditional subjects.

It needs unique skills and mindset to find "poetry in science" and "science in poetry". Soumi, is one of the few such talented and creative individuals who possesses that uniqueness.
The workshop she had curated and successfully conducted has all the elements to tie the knot between the two fields. The final outcome by the kids, mentored by Soumi speaks for itself about the creativity, artistry and execution. I am sure, this workshop and her endeavour will reach the height they deserve.
As for my daughter, Tanisha, whom Soumi mentored in this workshop told me that the entire experience was very enriching and exciting!

It has been a fun and intriguing experience for me. I learnt how poetry and Science have deep connections and interesting forms of poetry can be created with science topics. I shall continue to use these tips and strategies in my writing.

This workshop has been a very interesting as well as enthralling experience for me. I have always wanted to try and make the lives of animals better. This may be a small step to achieving that, yet it was a very significant one. Science is a subject that I love and the way this workshop has combined writing techniques with scientific facts is what I really loved. Your mentoring has always helped me to grow more. Lastly, I would like to thank you for giving me this opportunity.
Love and regards

I loved exploring science - black holes, whales and fossils were interesting ideas. And looking at them through poetic lens was thought provoking. It definitely made me think.

The workshop has increased my daughter’s creativity and thinking skills by leaps and bounds. Soumi is an exceptional teacher and a very inspiring mentor. She is very passionate about the cause which has ignited a new spirit in my daughter. She has successfully managed to capture the attention of all the children which can be a very tedious job. She is extremely creative and versatile and there was not a single dull moment in her classes. My daughter has loved learning under her.

Soumi is wonderful with kids. Kids are very picky about teachers. I am impressed how she made the kids keep their commitments without being agressive. I think my daughter learnt that it takes time to make something good. They are so used to instant gratification. Hopefully this lesson teaches them not just to write well, but learn to accept mistakes and make things better.

The topics chosen by Soumi are thought provoking and pertinent. The way she can connect two totally different subjects and make it interesting as well as an enjoyable experience is amazing. Overall the workshops that have been conducted by Wordplay have helped many .. not only by letting them explore and know more but also by making them connect to life in a better way. Her mentoring of young minds is wonderful.  Her teaching pedagogy is extremely  innovative  and effective. Hats off to Soumi!!

Some people have the knack of bringing out the best from childen by letting them enjoy the journey. Soumi Duttagupta of WORDPLAY does just that! My son looks forward to more of her workshops. She bought together Science and Poetry for these boys and girls and tied creativity about one’s environment.
The result was
A black hole couplet
A Fossil Conquain
A Free verse on blue whale.
Hats off to you!!!
