Overview

In this interdisciplinary creative writing workshop, we will playfully weave in science and arts to explore the word ‘UNLESS’ in the context of deforestation and conservation. Dr. Suess in his Seussian language had successfully popularized the environmental message, ‘Conserving leads to survival’.

This story is extremely relevant even after 50 years. The writing program themed on this story intends to raise the ecological literacy of the children by making them aware of the dangers we humans impose due to our ‘ECOLOGICAL FOOTSTEPS’.

This is a 4-day creative workshop. It is spread across a month, with once-a-week sessions to help children imbibe and work on the lessons learned in the class through the week.

The culmination of "UNLESS" – The Lorax Word

Seed is hope!!!
Seed is life!!!
Seed is forest!!!
These are the metaphors that my l’lle WORDPLAY writers gave me when I asked them to complete the sentence, ‘Seed is…….
Mr. Oncler in the story ‘The Lorax’ by Dr. Sues handed the only and the last seed to Ted and said,
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
Our grade 2 and 3 WORDPLAY writers joined hands with Ted to tell you how important it is to sow a seed and restore a forest!!
Wordplay’s way to reiterate this year’s theme of for World Wildlife Day, Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet”
They loved the science of seed to a sapling and getting drenched in the rains of the rain forest they wrote poems on Forest with newly collected onomatopoeic words ( sound words)…..
From now on poems and drawings are their weapon to fight deforestation.
Come lets all pledge with them to save our forests.

Workshop Response

The workshop is unique as it playfully brings the children closer to nature. They are eager to express themselves and pen down their thoughts in a very creative way. I would like to Congratulate the mentor for a wonderful job! Looking forward to more!

It was a wonderful experience for my child . Soumi’s workshop has helped Arnav in many ways to enhance his writing skills. Her guidance and support is so beautiful throughout.

I would really like to congratulate wordplay for the brilliant work they are doing . Their interdisciplinary writing programs are unique and one of its kind. The recently concluded 'Save the Species' program ,for primary grades, was extremely well thought of and designed. The kids explored the real world problem of climate change ,leading to mass extinction of species, they empathetically weaved stories around the species and in the process learnt the art of writing . Would really like to thank the mentor for curating such wonderful content! Wishing her all the best 👍

Thank you so much Soumi! It’s been such a fabulous workshop and I am super impressed with the enthusiasm and energy levels of the girls the way they discussed with each other, brainstormed, argued and then agreed and their preparation before each class was so interesting to watch. Malvika looks forward to attending the session every day. Overall, great exposure for her and would like her to attend many more such workshops in the future! Thanks once again!

The journey of my boys with Soumi’s session was filled with joy and excitement. The eagerness with which they looked forward to their weekly sessions with their mentor, Soumi, was unmissable. They enjoyed putting together puzzles on ‘Me’, loved playing the story games and dramatising the verbs. Building stories and writing poems were made a breeze. They eagerly awaited the release of their ebook and proudly pointed out their work reminiscing the beautiful memories that they created along the way.
As a parent, I could clearly see that my 8year olds have evolved in their creative expressions.
Thank you Soumi for curating this innovative program called Tell-a-Tale for little minds and moulding them into curious thinkers while keeping their innocence, inquisitiveness and creativity intact!

I had two of my children enrolled in this workshop. They were also the youngest. In the first class I saw twins struggle with the concept and that worried me a bit. Soumi was very understanding of the fact and things changed quickly. Soumi is a very dedicated teacher and a very patient human being. She has a way with kids and is somehow able engage children online very effectively. My kids had fun in the "Endangered species' workshop. 🙂 They used to look forward to all the activities like poster making and interactions with their teacher and other kids. I suppose kids of different ages & interests have/ had different takeaway(s) from this workshop. But they shared one thing in common- they all had fun and enjoyed these sessions!
